Sources at touch panel and related component makers have revealed that companies are currently having their products undergo sampling with Asustek Computer in bids to win orders for next-generation Asus Eee PC laptops and touch-screen notebooks, which are set to launch later this year, DigiTimes reports.
The second-generation of Eee PCs will support panel sizes of 8-, 9- and 10-inch. The 9-inch versions will feature a touch-panel. The touch-screen display is expected to add only under $15 to the manufacturing cost of the Eee PC reportedly.
The 9-inch touch panel-equipped Eee PCs will adopt four-wire resistive touch screen technology, according to DigiTimes’ sources.
Asustek has released this weekend the Asus U2 11.1-inch luxury notebook series, which is a successor of the U1 ultraportable.
The Asus U2 features the Intel Core Duo Processor ULV (ultra-low voltage) U7500 at 1.06GHz paired with the Intel GM965 Express Chipset, which incorporates the GMA X3100 integrated graphics. The laptop’s thin LED backlight 11.1″ display has a 1366×768 resolution and enables a lower power consumption, better luminance, and faster response time, when compared to standard CCFL backlight displays.
The U2 sub-notebook, which starts at 2.75 pounds, comes with up to 120GB 1.8-inch hard drive at 4200rpm or 32GB solid state drive, and supports up to 4GB of system memory. It features the Intel WiFi Link 4965AGN or Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection, a LAN port, and a 56K modem, as well as a built-in web camera, three USB ports, a VGA port, and a micro-DVI output.
For enhanced security, there are a Trusted Platform Module (TPM), and a fingerprint reader. In addition, the webcam is complemented with ASUS SmartLogon software that “intelligently recognizes its rightful owner and grants access to the computer accordingly after a positive facial scan”.
According to Asustek, the U2’s chassis features materials such as polished stainless steel and premium leather.
This ultraportable runs Windows Vista operating system.
Pricing and availability date are currently unknown.
It’s been a real MID / UMPC bonanza at CES this year, and we’re not done quite yet. We got to handle the ASUS R50A at the company’s small — yet crowded — booth, and we’ve brought back pictures for the gang. While the design is fairly solid on the device, the unit feels a bit slippery to the touch. The button / navigation placement works, though coming to grips with everything wasn’t exactly a smooth transition. Once again, we’re seeing that miniaturized Vista, and honestly, we’re not totally convinced this is the platform of choice for these pixel-dense screens. Check out the gallery and see the little guy in action.

Asus showcases the company’s first notebooks based on the Intel Core 2 Duo “Penryn” processor at the ongoing 2008 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
The Intel “Penryn” CPUs, produced using new 45-nanometer technology, can be found in the Asus Lamborghini Mini VX3 ultraportable, the Asus Lamborghini VX2Sn, Asus M51Sr, and F8p notebooks, and in the G70 and G1Sn gaming laptops.
It’s interesting that one of the displayed laptops - the Asus VX2Sn - features an upcoming video card from Nvidia - the GeForce 9500M.
At CES, the PC maker also showcases its first semi-rugged notebook and the R50 UMPC device.
Asustek is preparing the release of the Asus G2K 17-inch gaming notebook, based on AMD/ATI technology.
The G2K, which looks like the Intel-powered G2S model, features the ATI RS690M chipset and the DirectX 10 compatible ATI HD2600 dedicated video card with 256MB of DDR3 video memory. It manages the laptop’s 17” 1920-by-1200 widescreen display. According to the product pages, the G2K-A1 model for the US market will come with the AMD Turion 64 X2 TL64 dual core processor at 2.2GHz, 2GB of system memory, a 160GB hard drive at 5,400rpm, and a DVD burner.
Asus G2K-A1 provides 802.11a/g/draft n wireless LAN, Gigabit Ethernet, Bluetooth and 56k modem connections, as well as a built-in 1.3 megapixel web camera. There are also five USB ports, an Express card slot, a 5-in-1 media card reader, a Firewire port, and eSATA external hard drive port. For audio/video output, it utilizes HDMI, VGA, S-Video, and S/PDIF ports. The G2K also has an AV-In port.
The gaming features of the Asus G2K-A1 include the Direct Messenger for personalized messages/e-mail set-up, Direct Flash as DX10 indicator, a gaming focused keyboard, gaming backpack, and gaming mouse.
This laptop weighs 9.6lbs and ships with Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium pre-installed.
According to Google Product Search the G2K-A1’s price ranges from $1,628 to $1,847. Keenzo retailer says it will be available starting on 11/19/2007.
In a bizarre incident in Taipei, Fudzilla ran across a user of the EeePC in a coffee shop. The person was deeply dissatisfied with their product, having purchased it earlier in the week.
The reason? It appears that Asus hasn’t quite finished it yet. It seems the product will have to be returned to Asus so they can upgrade the screen, and for an additional fee they will upgrade the operating system to Windows XP. (Right now from what I could gather, it uses a Linux OS). Check out the exclusive pictures below: Read the rest of this entry »
We just caught sight of three new Asus laptops, but it looks like that’s not all the company has up its sleeve, with its ultra-portable U1E model now also making its first appearance. This one boasts an even smaller form factor than the company’s just-announced 12.1-inch, 3.3 pound U6S laptop, in this case shrinking things down to an 11.1-inch WXGA display and a mere 2.2 pound carrying weight (albeit with only a 3 cell battery). Otherwise, you’ll get an Intel Core Duo ULV7500 processor, up to 2GB of RAM, a 100GB hard drive, and built-in WiFi and Bluetooth, with an external DVD burner thrown in for good measure. A nine cell battery is also available for those that actually want to get some work done, with it apparently promising upwards of six hours of running time. Look for this one to be available next month, in Italy at least, for €1,999 (or $2,844).

The laptop has the NVIDIA GeForce 8400M G graphics with 128MB of dedicated video memory, which manages a 12.1” 1280-by-800 pixel LED backlight display. This laptop supports up to 2GB of RAM, and incorporates a 250GB hard drive at 5400rpm rotational speed, as well as a DVD burner.
Along with a HSDPA module, the ASUS U6S provides Intel 4965/a/b/g/draft-n wireless connectivity, a Gigabit Ethernet, a 56k modem, and a Bluetooth. Regarding ports and slots, this ultraportable features HDMI, VGA and SPDIF outputs, four USB ports, an ExpressCard slot, and a 8-in-1 card reader.
According to the translation of the NotebookItalia’s article, its 0.3 megapixel web camera has a sort of face recognition functionality. For enhanced security, there are a fingerprint reader and the Trusted Platform Module (TPM).
The notebook weighs around 3.86 pounds with a six-cell battery, providing up to five hours of run time reportedly. The published images of the U6S reveal that it has leather-covered palm rests.
The ASUS U6S is expected to hit the European market next month, with a price tag of 1,999 Euros (approximately $ 2,834). There is no info on its availability in the United States.
The laptop will ship with Windows Vista Home Premium.
